As 2023 draws to an end, triple-P wishes to acknowledge the team behind Enviro Waste Picker for their dedication and hard work in their endeavours to tackle waste issues and maintain cleanliness in Tembisa.
Founded in 2023 by Mpule and Tshepang, the goal of the organisation is to create a cleaner environment for the benefit of their fellow residents. They believe that illegally dumped waste hurts the community, particularly those living near the waste dumping sites, with reports of rodent infestations and flies around these sites a huge cause for concern for the general health of the public.
Enviro Waste Picker currently employs six members of the community and to encourage better waste management practices, they have opened a recycling buyback centre that accepts white paper, cardboard, aluminium cans, glass bottles, HD, and PET from the community. This has seen a significant increase in the collection of recyclables, which has contributed to less waste and greater cleanliness in the area.
As a youth-owned enterprise, Enviro Waste Picker sets an excellent example not only of how young people can make a difference by actively participating in environmental conservation efforts, but in the benefit of partnering with communities to holistically address social, economic, and environmental challenges.
