Today – 11 September 2023, months of work finally came together to bring clean drinking water to the learners and staff at Rethabile Primary School in Hammanskraal.
Through our partnership with WaterIcon which provides water treatment solutions and engineering company Takats’Eau we were able to install a new water processing system in the school that takes the current supply of contaminated borehole water and converts it into safe drinking water for the learners and educators.
After a cholera outbreak some months ago in the Hammanskraal area, water from the taps is still not deemed safe for human consumption leaving communities helpless, with many having to spend what little money they have on buying bottled water.
The water crisis in Hammanskraal is not a new issue, as it dates back to 2005 when residents started noticing an unusual taste and smell in their tap water. The source of the town’s drinking water from the Temba dam, which is fed by the Apies River. Research indicates that the contamination in the water is caused by the river where a dysfunctional water treatment upstream sees a constant flow of untreated wastewater entering the river.
While the water crisis in Hammanskraal is far from over, thanks to the efforts of partners like WaterIcon and Takats’Eau we are able to make some inroads towards fulfilling this basic human right and providing clean drinking water for learners and staff at Rethabile Primary School.
